Aquamarine the Mermaids Treasure
Aquamarine the Mermaids Treasure

Aquamarine is both a colour and a gemstone. The stone has been mined in Russia, Brazil, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Australia, Africa, Madagascar and United States. Aquamarine belongs to the Beryl family of gemstones. It crystallizes into hexagonal prisms of blue or blue/green obtaining its colour from the oxidation of iron. The colours in the natural stone range from soft blue/ greens of the oceans and into white, like the foam on the ocean waves.
The name of the stone comes from the Latin words aqua meaning “water” and mare meaning “the sea”. Legend tells us that it is the mermaid’s treasure, which offers good luck and protection to sailors.
Aquamarine is the accepted modern day birthstone for the month of March. Crystal healers relate Aquamarine stone to the cooling, calming effect of water. The water element is the connection to the deepest emotions, and so this stone works wonderfully on cleansing the emotional body, keeping it in balance with the mental body. It calms the nerves and is very effective for people with nervous disorders. The gentle purifying effect of Aquamarine helps to release fears and phobias.
Aquamarine is a combination of the blue and green colour ray. Blue is the colour associated with the throat chakra. Blue enhances communication. Green is the healing color associated with the heart. Aquamarine is energetically a soft, loving, feminine stone of intuitive knowing and clear communication with the Goddess. Wearing Aquamarine helps to bring out Inner Beauty. It can assist both men and women in developing intuition and a clearer communication of feelings and emotions.
Use Aquamarine to calm angry feelings and emotional turmoil. Wear it over the thyroid, between the heart and throat, to help with problems with the vocal chords, communication and speech.
Often consider the stone of the mystic. Aquamarine acts as a wonderful aid for meditation. While it calms, it does not sedate, but rather allows one to achieve a state of relaxed conscious awareness. Hold the stone during meditation or bring it close to your body, especially if you find that you cannot stay awake during your meditation. Quiet contemplation with an aquamarine helps to connect with an ocean of awareness.
Aquamarine’s energy infused into drinking water is reputed to produce age-reversing benefits. The reason for this is related to the calming effect it has on the nervous system. We know that excess stress will age a person very quickly. To create an elixir of gemstone water, first cleanse the Aquamarine energetically by running it under water for a few minutes. Then fill the glass with pure spring water and place the clean aquamarine stones in it. The gem water will be ready to use in three to eight hours. When you drink the treated water, the purifying, balancing and calming effects are released on all levels. (physical, mental, emotional and spiritual)
If you find you are enjoying the effects of using aquamarine gem water make a larger more concentrated solution by using more water and leaving it over a longer period of time. Then add it to your bath water and enjoy the mermaid’s treasure.
Aquamarine is not toxic, so this method is safe. If you decide to use this method with other stones, check first to make sure they do not release toxic minerals into the water. I refer to the book “Gem Water” by Michael Geiger and Joachim Goebel. The book provides a list of crystals which are safe to use in this way.
With the stress and activity of our often fast paced lives, many people could benefit greatly from the energy of this special crystal. I find just gazing at its colour shifts me easily into a calm state and helps to reveal deep inner truths. By working with it as a friend and co creator we can learn more about the many positive restorative qualities of this watery gift from the Earth.
